Hot humid summers are typical for studying in Tokyo. August is the hottest month averaging 27.5 °C (81.5 °F). Light cotton clothing, suitable footwear etc are essential. Dress for comfort. If you have fair skin, bring or buy a hat and sunscreen. Some of our optional field trips and tours visit beaches, so swimwear may be worth bringing. If you are planning on participating in the Mount Fuji Climb, please bring hiking boots and appropriate warm clothing. June (rainy season) and September (typhoons) are usually the wettest months.
Winters are generally mild, with January the coldest month, averaging 6.0 °C (42.8 °F). Winds can be strong though, so if studying in winter, please bring adequate warm clothing, especially if you are planning to travel and/or participate in winter sports and excursions. There are snowfalls every winter in the city, though the snowfalls are generally light.
